David Morris is currently the Director of Bands for the Hatfield Public Schools where he teaches all 5th and 6th grade instrumental group lessons, elementary, middle and high school band, jazz band, music theory and extra curricular chamber ensembles. Prior to his appointment in Hatfield he taught in Brockton, Massachusetts as a Woodwind Specialist and a Middle and Elementary School Band Director. While in Brockton David also taught the All-City Jazz Band, an ensemble featuring middle school students from all over the city and served as an assistant to the Brockton High School Marching Band. In addition to his teaching duties in Brockton, David also maintained a private studio with Brockton High School music students and his alma mater Stoughton High School, where he was a frequent guest clinician of the jazz ensembles. In 2009 he was chosen to play in the Massachusetts All State Jazz ensemble.
David earned both of his degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he received a B.M. (’13) in Music Education/Saxophone Performance and an M.M. (’17) in Wind Conducting. While enrolled at the university he was an active performer in both large and chamber ensembles and was also a member of the Minuteman Marching Band. He has performed in a wide variety of venues including Symphony Hall in Boston, Leamy Concert Hall at the USCG Academy, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and “The Big House” in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has also performed at CBDNA as a member of the UMass Wind Ensemble and at the Navy Saxophone Symposium as a member of the studio quartet. During his senior year of undergraduate study he was selected as an intern to the Wind Studies department under Dr. James Patrick Miller. His primary conducting teachers and mentors are Dr. Matthew Westgate and Dr. James Patrick Miller. His primary saxophone teacher is Lynn Klock and he has also studied with Jonathan Hulting-Cohen, Paul Lieberman, James Merenda and Paul Alberta.
David is in his third year as a member of The Valley Winds as an Alto Saxophonist and serves as Personnel Manager for the ensemble. He also serves as the Assistant Conductor for the Youth Wind Ensemble of Springfield. In his free time Dave is an avid golfer and runner. He resides in South Hadley, Massachusetts with his wife Rachel and daughter Evelynn.
