Winner of the Valley Winds Inaugural Concerto Competition, clarinetist Jonathan Oakes placed first in the VT District 5 Music Festival Band in which he has participated for the last six years. Has been a member of the Vermont All-State Band for two years and this year won the principal clarinet chair in the All-State Orchestra. Jonathan has also been a member of the New England Music Festival Orchestra for two years.
Having studied the clarinet for eight years, Jonathan also plays the saxophone and flute. He attends Green Mountain Union High School in Ludlow, VT where Alexander Brady is the band director. Jonathan is a member of the Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble, Springfield, VT Community Band and has played in the orchestra for his high school musical productions of Grease, Beauty and the Beast, and Annie.
In addition to his musical endeavors, Jonathan has been an avid member of an equestrian team participating in competitions all over New England. He placed fourth at the National Horse Show in Oklahoma City in 2018. He also enjoys cross-country running and skiing.
Jonathan is a student of Valley Winds clarinetist Janice Murphy and plans to study music in college. He has a strong passion for music and imagines himself in a career of music education and performance.
